Kristina Mladenovic defeats Harriet Dart [WC] 6-3, 6-4
It was a battling performance from Harriet Dart, who initially took the early break lead in the opening game, but the more experienced Kristina Mladenovic really did find her serving form, found the spots and targets in the corner of the box and showed she can still be a force to be reckoned with when that single shot is firing on all cylinders.
The Frenchwoman had very little difficulties securing the set from the break down, and was never to face another break point for the remainder of the set. Dart showed plenty of fight, plenty of determination and showed a willingness to compete even when her opponent was playing stellar tennis that was tough to stop.
The early break in the second set really did push home the advantage for Mladenovic. Dart had her chances in terms of gaining early leads in her service games, but the former Top-10 player really served big serves, accurate serves in the tight moments and that was the telling difference.
As far as Dart’s performance goes, she showed she is not too far away from where she needs to be. This match is another positive indication that the Brit can move on to better things in the 2019 season. The next six months will be vital as Dart makes that initial transition from playing well at ITF events to making the move onto the main tour in the tough qualifying rounds and in the early stages of WTA main draws.
