Karolina Pliskova def. Petra Kvitova 6-3 6-4
From the start it looked like it was going to be Karolina Pliskova’s day as Petra Kvitova had what looked like another slow start, going down a double break and leaving herself a lot to do if she wanted to qualify with a straight sets win. She broke back once but it was not enough to prevent Pliskova from closing out for a lead.
The first set gone, and with that her chances of qualifying, Kvitova turned up the pace to go 3-0 up in the second set, but after a series of breaks in the middle of the set, the decisive break towards the end of the set went Pliskova’s way, before she grabbed her first tour level win over her compatriot.
With that third loss in a row, Kvitova’s time is over after a remarkable year. It was her first full season since the knife attack which almost ended her career and in that time she won a tour-leading five titles, had the longest match winning streak and found her way back to Singapore.
She said, after the match: “Since last year when I came back, I just wanted to have some matches. I started this year not great in Australia, so that’s why I asked for the wild card in St. Petersburg, which was great idea afterwards, and then we just kept going, of course some big tournaments which you don’t want to skip I need to play.
“I’m not sitting here and regret something which I did this season, I think. I think it was great to have so many matches afterwards. It’s the best practice what you can have. I think I improved a lot of things in those matches which I played.
“What I can change for 2019? I don’t know. I just need to sit and have a think about. But there is still a lot of things which I can improve in the game, for sure. Of course those matches which I played here show something which I need to work on it, and, yeah, we’ll see what will happen.”
Kvitova will represent the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup final against the USA, which takes place in Prague between 10-11 November.
