Harriet Dart [Q] v Priscilla Hon [WC] – First meeting
Harriet Dart is starting the new season in fine form having reached her highest ranking this year, cracking the Top 150. She breezed through her first qualifying round for the loss of just two games. It was a slightly harder task in the second round against No. 7 Kateryna Kozlova, having to come from a set down to advance.
A win over former Top 10 player Andrea Petkovic was equally impressive with a tight first set, before pulling away from the German for a straight sets win and finds herself with potentially another winnable match here against Aussie wild-card Priscilla Hon.
The Aussie has an all-court game which does gave her a lot of options, but at times that lacks the consistency to pull that all together. She has made improvements in her serve and is working on her court smarts.
What Dart has going for her is court time in Brisbane and developing the match-tightness that is vital this early in the season, but she will be up against a lot of home-crowd support – but Dart is a pretty feisty player and character.
Her withering riposte to a journalist at Wimbledon who asked her what she would be spending her first-round money on earned a sharp reply she would be investing in her training. She had given Karolina Pliskova a good scare in the first round of Wimbledon and finished the year with an ITF title in Oslo.
Dart can mix a lot of pace on her groundstrokes with surprising force, depth and accuracy, and if she can keep her head about her – she could well get a win here.
Prediction: Dart in three sets.
Dart & Hon are scheduled on Show Court 1, not before 5pm (7am GMT).
