As this rivalry continues, it had the hallmarks of being another close battle between the pair as their matches often have been recently. With both Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov testing the waters, facing break points each in their opening service games but it would be the Canadian who looked the steadier of the two at the end of the first set, breaking Edmund for the lead.

Edmund had an earlier medical time-out to res-trap his foot, and following on from tonsillitis straight after Wimbledon, he looked to be flagging quite badly at the start of the second set as he was broken twice for Shapovalov to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

From there Edmund was rewarded with a brief second wind, and held onto his serve as it came under increasing pressure from the Canadian before twisting the knife with another break to get things back on serve.

Even then he was gesturing to his coach that he not only had a foot issue, but also possibly a stomach issue as well but despite cutting a dejected looking figure on the benches at the changes of ends, Edmund four match points before finally Shapovalov could close it out.

Assking for a can of coke for some sugar, Edmund was less than impressed to be brought two cans – Diet Coke and Zero Sugar Coke.

To add insult to injury (and indeed illness!) after he lost he was presented with a couple of cans of the full fat coke!

Edmund now heads into the US Open with a single win under his belt in four matches, and is not currently scheduled to play in Winston Salem next week.

The US Open takes place between 27 August to 9 September.
