[1] Petra Martic

Despite reaching the final in Zhengzhou at the end of last season, 2020 has been more sedate start for Martic. Her best pre-lockdown was the semi-final in Dubai, as she makes her debut in Palermo.

Martic’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Alison Van Uytvanck | H2H: Martic leads 1-0
  • R2: Kirsten Flipkens | H2H: Tied at 1-1 (Incl. ITF)
  • QF: Elise Mertens [5] | H2H: Mertens leads 2-0
  • SF: Anett Kontaveit [4] | H2H: Martic leads 1-0
  • F: Marketa Vondrousova [2] | H2H: Martic leads 4-1

Having reached the final of the French Open, without dropping a set, and thus becoming the first teenager since Ana Ivanovic to contest the French Open final, she did not have the same impact at Wimbledon, bouncing out in the first round, and after missing time on tour with a left wrist injury, she had surgery in September missing the rest of the season.

She started the year with a run to the quarter-final of Adelaide, but failed to set any of the other tournaments pre-lockdown alight.

Vondrousova’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: QUALIFIER/LUCKY LOSER
  • R2: Rebecca Peterson | First Meeting
  • QF: Dayana Yastremska [7] | H2H tied at 1-1
  • SF: Maria Sakkari [3] | First Meeting
  • F: Petra Martic [1] | H2H: Martic leads 4-1

[3] Maria Sakkari

It had been a decent start to the year for Sakkari, with runs to the R16 at Adelaide, St. Petersburg and Doha, before lockdown halted her progress, as she makes her debut at Palermo.

Sakkari’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Kristyna Pliskova | H2H: Sakkari leads 1-0
  • R2: Sorana Cirstea | H2H: Cirstea leads 2-0
  • QF: Ekaterina Alexandrova [8] | H2H: Sakarri leads 3-0
  • SF: Marketa Vondrousova [2] | First Meeting
  • F: Petra Martic [1] | H2H: Sakkari leads 1-0

[4] Anett Kontaveit

Like many players, Kontaveit started the year with a sense of optimism, and was rewarded with a run to the quarter-final of the Australian Open, which was her best performance at the opening Slam of the year.

Also like many players – Palermo is a debut stop on the tour for her, in a disrupted season.

Kontaveit’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Patrica Maria Tig | H2H: Kontaveit leads 2-0
  • R2: Laura Siegemund | H2H: Kontaveit leads 1-0
  • QF: Donna Vekic | H2H: Kontaveit leads 1-0
  • SF: Petra Martic [1] | H2H: Svitolina leads 5-1
  • F: Karolina Pliskova [2] | H2H: Pliskova leads 5-4
