Johanna Konta [4/WC] v Ocean Dodin | Konta leads H2H 1-0 (ITF)

Despite coming under fire from some mean-spirited quarters for opting to give Great Britain’s Fed Cup trip to Slovakia a miss, Johanna Konta has already started to ease her way in to the next part of the season, following a less than successful Australian swing.

Konta herself had been quite pragmatic about the start to the year, following her first-round loss to Ons Jabeur – the decision to compete was all part of the process of rehabilitation and management of a knee injury that affected her last season.

Teaming up with Caroline Garcia in the doubles, Konta registered a first win on the books on her debut at the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy, and will face France’s Oceane Dodin as her opening opponent, having been given a bye into the second round.

With a confident save and a penchant for hardcourts, Dodin will feel confident of delivering a shock having already come through qualifying as well as taking out Viktoria Kuzmova in the first round for the loss of only four games.

The flat hard-hitting of the Frenchwoman might play more into Konta’s aggressive game, and if she can dictate the points, it will go far to instilling some confidence in the No. 1 Brit after a faltering start to the season.

However, it does tend to take Konta a while to build up her confidence, and with the qualifier having absolutely nothing to lose, Konta will need her own serve to be firing solidly as often the rest of her game falls into line if she has that confidence.

Either way do not be surprised if it takes the distance to get the win.

Prediction: Konta in three sets.

Konta and Dodin are scheduled on the Sibur Arena, not before 4pm (1pm GMT).
