Johanna Konta def. Anastasia Potapova 6-7(6) 6-3 7-6(7)
Having not won a match since the US Open last year, wins were a long time coming in the 2020 season for British No. 1 Johanna Konta. She had a first meeting against Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova.
The Russian was the quickest off the blocks, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Konta pegged that deficit back. There were other chances for a break to go ahead, but Konta could not convert.
The pace being generated from both sides of the net saw a competitive run in to the tie-break and it looked as though Konta would surge ahead after going up 4-2, but the teenager had other ideas, holding off the Brit to take the first set.
It was Konta’s turn to come out on top of a flurry of breaks at the start of the second set, and from a 4-1 lead, she stayed steady to level the match and take it into a decider.
Once more it was Potapova who started the brighter, building up a comfortable looking 4-1 lead, before Konta started to work her way back into the match. She deflected a match point and broke as Potapova served for the match, forcing a second tie-break.
Konta lost her first two match points, and Potapova earned a second before Konta closed out the match on her third attempt.
As reported by the WTA, Konta said after the match: “It was an incredibly tough match, very tough conditions out there, it was very windy, very blustery, so it made it extra difficult for both of us to play, really. But I think overall, both of us played at a great level, we played a very exciting match for everybody who was there watching.
“Personally I’m really pleased I’ve been able to come through such a tough match. Especially, it was the first of its kind for me this season, and to be able to come through it, I’m really pleased with it.”

Konta v Maria Bouzkova | First meeting
It will be another first-time meeting for Konta to puzzle out when she faces Maria Bouzkova. The Czech is one of the up and coming army of players who excelled as a junior, winning the 2014 US Open junior title.
She considers herself an all-court player and moves well with solid ground-strokes to back that up.
What has impressed about Konta this week is that she is still steadfastly throwing in her drop-shots and her movement despite the ongoing issues with her knee has been impressive.
The Brit is very much a confidence player, and she has had a fair few puzzles to work out this week. Potapova arguably was a bigger challenge, but Bouzkova has had some solid matches under her belt this year and this has all the trademarks of another tough fight on the cards, if Konta wants to kick start her season with a final.
Prediction: Konta in three sets.
Konta and Bouzkova are scheduled on Estadio GNO Seguros at 2pm (8pm GMT).
