Preview: Heather Watson v Harriet Dart [LL] | H2H: Watson leads 1-0 (ITF)

It has been a while since Heather Watson has faced Fed Cup team-mate Harriet Dart over a net, but perhaps more significantly it will be Watson’s first tournament since a rocky start to the season in Australia.

Unfortunate to be part of the hard lockdown crew, Watson came away with just one win Down Under, and one in the season opener in Abu Dhabi.

Dart has been busy in qualies but makes it into the main draw as a lucky loser, and thus has a free hit, and maybe even comes in just a little more match-tight than the more experienced Watson.

H2H: Heather Watson (WR 65) Harriet Dart (WR 153)
Tournament Previous Best Title (2016) R1 (2019, 2021)
1st Serve Return Points Won % 29.3 36.6
Return Points Won % 37.9 44.2
Break Point Conversion % 39.7 52.8
Break Points Saved % 58.3 53.5
Total Points Won % 48.6 48.5

By virtue of a couple more matches under her belt this year, Dart comes out on top with her stats, although even allowing for Watson’s lack of matches, she has been on a par with Dart in terms of her total points won.

Playing Styles

Dart plays an aggressive game and she packs a punch in terms of the depth, precision and force with which she can send a ball back.

Watson has all the experience to handle that, and has worked on her own more aggressive approach, but couples that with excellent defence when required. Both move well, but you have to wonder with her doubles experience over the years whether Watson will look to make Dart move a lot more or try to burn her at the net.

Prediction

Watson looked good in the restart in the various Battle of the Brits tournaments but failed to bring that form back on the tour when it started, and this season has also been a struggle. Dart has more matches in her legs, but Watson really ought to come away with the win here, but it would be no surprise if Dart makes a quick start given that she will be used to match play on these courts and makes Watson go the distance.

Prediction: Watson in three sets.
