Heather Watson [Q] v Irina-Camelia Begu | H2H: Begu leads 2-0

After a slow start to 2019, losing in her first round of Brisbane qualifying, but with semi-final points to defend Heather Watson’s confidence needs to be high, especially if she wants to get on the board in that head to head against Irina-Camelia Begu.

Watson had a couple of solid straight set wins coming into the main draw, but it is a tough opener. The Brit made changes to her game to play a lot more aggressively – but she has never lost that ability to switch from attack to defence.

Begu is quite a defensive player, and usually prefers to wear her opponents down from the back of the court, and in their past encounters she has eased past Watson in straight sets so it will be a real case of hanging on, and trying to be a little more daring when she can.

Begu comes in also a little match shy, having gone out in her Brisbane opener too, so with two matches in Hobart already under her belt, hopefully this gives Watson a bit of an edge, but she might have to make Begu work this time.

Prediction: Begu in three sets.
