British No. 2 Heather Watson continued a solid run of form and fighting spirit when she fought through a three setter to defeat Christina McHale. She will have expected a battle as their matches have always gone the distance.

Watson started the stronger in the first set breaking for a 3-0 lead, and although she was pegged back, she broke once more to regain her advantage. McHale saved two set points but Watson prevailed to take the first set.

McHale got the upper hand in the second set, breaking the Brit twice in succession to level the match comfortably before Watson mirrored the pattern of the second set and broke twice to wrap up a spot in her second semi-final of the season.

Watson v Wang Xiyu | First meeting

Watson now finds herself as the only seed left in the draw, and faces Wang Xiyu who after a slow start to the year reached the Hua Hin quarter-final before moving over the Acapulco. Watson’s start to the year was solid with her semi-final run in Hobart and she finished last year strongly, and this is a good base to move ahead.

Wang is a talented teenager who is being touted as a successor to the legendary Li Na, and when you consider at the start of 2018 she was ranked World no. 587 and closed out that year just outside the Top 200, and now is hovering outside the Top 100 she has a game to move her forward at a rapid rate.

Watson has the experience, but can also go the long way round to get wins and against a first-time opponent, she will need to use that experience to figure out Wang and push ahead for another crack at some silverware.

Prediction: Watson in three sets.
