Liam Broady [WC] def Marco Cecchinato 6-3 6-4 6-0

Liam Broady won his first Wimbledon match since 2015 after beating former grand slam semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato with the loss of seven games. The Brit had to save a break point in the first game as he looked to be the more aggressive player.

However Broady couldn’t break down the Italian who held his own in the opening set as he looked to use his experience to get him through. However in the eighth game, Broady’s pressure told as he broke to love and then held to take the opening set 6-3.

In the second set the world number 143 continued his momentum creating three more break points in two of his first three return games but Cecchinato held firm. Similar to the opening set both players were resilient and looked to get the first break.

Also just like the first set it was Broady who dealt the crucial blow in the ninth game as he broke for a 5-4 lead. Cecchinato pushed for the break back, earning three break points in the process however clutch serving saw Broady save them and on his second set point close out the set for a two sets to love lead.

In the end the Italian’s frustrations showed in his quality of tennis in the third set and Broady won a comfortable third set to seal victory. After the match Broady explained how relieved he was to get the win after a six year drought:

“Six years is a long time in a tennis career. Obviously I think it was in 2019 I made last round of qualies, I was two sets to love up, ended losing in five, which was a bit of a heartbreaker. So it felt good to put this one away in straight sets today. I just wanted to try and get it done as quickly as possible in the third, keep him down. He was a little bit upset, which made it easier with his level and stuff. But, yeah, I mean, six years is a long time.”

Looking at the stats, it is clear that grass isn’t Schwartzman’s favourite surface with relatively weak first serve and second serve return points won in the surface. The Brit will look to capitalise on the break point opportunities that he does have and continue to elevate his first serve percentage to dictate the points on his terms.

Playing styles and predictions

Schwartzman’s style is based on his quick movement, athleticism, and his swift transition from defensive play to attacking play. At times this season the Argentinian has been out of confidence until he won a few matches at Roland Garros. This is something that Broady will be looking at and the return of serve for the Brit will be one of the keys to victory.

This match will be about keeping a high first serve and reducing the chances that Schwartzman will get on return. This is arguably Broady’s biggest chance to reach the third round and although it will be tight the Brit could cause a shock here.

Prediction: Broady in four sets.
