Daniil Medvedev v Marcos Giron | First Meeting
Defending champion Daniil Medvedev broke his Cincinnati Masters duck in spectacular fashion last year after never being past the first round, to run to the final in that remarkable US Summer swing that proved to be his break-out.
Medvedev eschewed any exhibition or domestic competition during the easing of the pandemic lockdown and was last in action in Marseille. He will be up against a more match-tight home-home in Marcos Giron, who has already had some time to get used to the quick courts here in the temporary home in New York, not to mention a lot of play on the Grand Slam Tennis Tours MatchPlay series.
Despite his height Medvedev is not the hugest server out on the tour but Giron can be expected to be made to rally all day long from the baseline, and it will be interesting to see how he starts with so little play since earlier in the year.
Prediction: Medvedev in straight sets.
Serena Williams v Arantxa Rus [Q] | H2H: Williams leads 1-0
Serena Williams’ comeback in Lexington was challenging despite getting three matches under her belt. Her first two matches saw her having to come from a set down, before being bested in three sets by Shelby Rogers and admitting she could play a lot better.
Arantxa Rus started her season on the European clay in Palermo and Prague and despite a three setter in her first qualification match, it looks as though she has settled into her rhythm well with far more straight-forward straight sets win.
However, all eyes will be on Serena, whose chance of finally equalling Margaret Court’s slam record could be substantially better at the US Open given the numbers of players who have chosen to skip travelling to the US.
We might expect another three-setter while Serena eases back into competition.
Prediction: Williams in three sets.
Madison Keys v Ons Jabeur | First Meeting
Keys was another player who was relatively quiet through the lockdown, captaining Team Kindness during the Credit One Bank Invitational in Charleston and the tournament was more renowned perhaps for the are they took amidst the gradual easing of lockdown measures, compared to the ill-fated Adria Tour taking place at the other side of the world.
Jabeur has long been a tricky prospect and she has started to show a lot more belief in herself, rewarded with a jump into a career high inside the World Top 40 at the start of the year.
Keys can expect Jabeur to charge into the net, and she mixes things up well with volleys and slices and moreover she has always seemed quite fearless regardless of who is over the other side of the net. She has had to fight quite hard in her matches since coming back, so expect her to make Keys work for a win.
Prediction: Keys in three sets.
Play continues at 11am (4pm BST).
