Dan Evans [23] v Thiago Seyboth Wild | First Meeting

British No. 1 Dan Evans will take on the 2018 US Open Boys Singles champion, the rather fantastically named Thiago Seyboth Wild in his opener at the US Open.

Evans has been making good use of his time during lockdown and beyond, being a key (and indeed vocal) component of the Battle of the Brits events, but more importantly got some good match-time under his belt.

Indeed, over the past few months the bad-boy of British tennis has grown into the mantle of British No. 1 and should expect to have a lot of the nation’s expectation on his shoulders, even with Andy Murray back in the mix.

Seyboth Wild can obviously find his way around a hard court, but for the majority of his time, and especially this year, he plied his trade on the dirt, and has not played a single stroke since March, pre-lockdown.

Evans can expect to face a barrage of fearless forehands from the young Brazilian who aims to drive everything from that shot, but he lacks the variety and experience that Evans brings to the court.

It has been a wild ride for the younger player, having become the youngest Brazilian to win an ATP title, in Santiago shortly before coronavirus hit. Then he was the first tennis player to test positive for the virus.

Evans has to get used to being the one being hunted having been for so long the underdog capable of springing surprises. Seyboth Wild can treat this as a free hit and none of the pressure will be on him, so Evans needs to stay present and in the moment, and not allow himself to get distracted, but still should progress.

Prediction: Evans in straight sets.

Evans and Seyboth Wild are scheduled third on Court 5, not before 2pm (7pm BST).
