Diego Schwartzman v Rafael Nadal | Nadal leads H2H 7-0
Two of the games biggest fighters will lock horns as a place in the last four beckons. Diego Schwartzman has been playing some electrifying tennis en route to his third Grand Slam quarterfinal. The Argentine has dropped just the single set and that was to Alexander Zverev in the previous round. Schwartzman will be looking to make a first Slam semifinal, but to do so he will have to defeat a top 5 player for the first time.
With Novak Djokovic‘s departure, Rafael Nadal might be the favourite to lift the trophy. The 33-year-old is the only player to reach all four Grand Slam quarterfinals this season after he produced a tremendous performance against Marin Cilic in round four. Nadal has won his last seven US Open quarterfinals, with his only loss coming in 2006.
The Spaniard has dominated the head-to-head with Schwartzman – the Argentine has managed to steal just two sets in their seven meetings. The 27-year-old simply does not have the firepower to hurt Nadal and a seventh last four showing in New York looks very much on the cards for the three-time champion.
Prediction: Nadal in straight sets.
Bianca Andreescu v Elise Mertens | First meeting
A maiden US Open semifinal is on the line for these two players. Bianca Andreescu continues to go from strength to strength as she looks to reach the last four on her US Open debut. The Canadian came through her first real test of the tournament against Taylor Townsend, dropping her first set here. At times, Andreescu look impossible to stop and that is showing in her results: she has won 38 out of her last 41 matches.
There is a very strong argument that Elise Mertens is playing the best tennis out of everyone right now. No one has managed to win more than three games in a set against her as she has literally brushed her opponents aside. The 23-year-old is familiar with this stage of a Grand Slam – the Belgian reached the semifinals of the Australian Open last season. Mertens is also in the semifinals of the doubles event which should only impact her in a positive way as her singles matches have been so straightforward.
This will be the pairs first ever meeting and a contrast of styles will create an entertaining affair. Andreescu will look to overpower the consistent Belgian. Both have been in terrific form but the Canadian may be too hot to handle for Mertens on this occasion.
Prediction: Andreescu in straight sets.

Matteo Berrettini v Gael Monfils | First meeting
Both players will see this match as a massive opportunity. Matteo Berrettini is enjoying a breakthrough season and he has been rewarded with a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal, but he wants more. The Italian is peaking at the right time and his impressive fourth round victory over Andrey Rublev was his first straight sets win of the tournament. Berrenttini has been playing outstanding tennis for a while – he is 15-3 since Roland Garros.
Gael Monfils was simply stunning in his most recent victory over Pablo Andujar (the Frenchman lost just five games). The crowd favourite is looking to make a second semifinal at the US Open, and third at Slams overall. To add to the pressure, a victory for Monfils will see him back in the top 10.
The two have never met before and the match has all the ingredients to be a great one. Berrettini plays a very direct, aggressive game, which Monfils will love as he can track balls down all day. On this occasion, the Frenchman’s experience in big matches could play a pivotal role in the outcome of the contest.
Prediction: Monfils in four sets.
