Last October Sofia Kenin reached the Roland Garros final and a sense that her consistency was going to lead to a grand slam title charge in 2021. But a surgery at the start of the season and a coaching split with her father has seen that weaken with the pressure firmly on to start picking up some form.

As for Jelena Ostapenko, there is now room for optimism after winning three matches in Rome as well as taking Karolina Pliskova to a last set tiebreak. The former Roland Garros champion seems to be picking confidence and self-belief heading into the place of her 2017 triumph.

Tomorrow it can be expected that Ostapenko will dictate the match with her hard-hitting, no nonsense approach with the American looking to frustrate the former champion with her defensive shot-making.

It’s never easy to predict an Ostepenko match but it looks likely that she’s in her best position yet to get a much-needed big win at a grand slam.

Prediction: Ostapenko in straight sets.

Normally, it would be a given that Roger Federer would be able to breeze past a qualifier and reach the second round. But Federer has not won a match since the pandemic and enters the second grand slam of the year with low expectations and an eye on the grass court season.

As for Denis Istomin, the Uzbekistani player has not been able to back up his shock win over Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open quite a few years ago. Istomin also hadn’t won back-to-back matches on clay heading into Roland Garros before winning three matches to qualify for the main draw.

Although on his day Istomin has the firepower to trouble Federer, clay isn’t his favourite surface and Federer should earn his first win since last year’s Australian Open.

Prediction: Federer in straight sets.

Just like Federer, Serena Williams goes into Roland Garros with a lack of match play and questionable form as she chases a record-equalling 24th grand slam. The only win in her clay season in 2021 came against the world number 502 although you should never count out Serena especially with a favourable draw.

As for Serena’s opponent, Irina-Camelia Begu comes in rusty form having only won two matches in Madrid and Rome combined with both wins coming in qualifying. However she made two consecutive last eight appearances in Madrid in 2015 and 2016 and is usually dangerous on this surface.

Begu is a powerful player that has good defensive skills but nothing that will overpower the American significantly in this match. This match is a good tester to see where Serena’s movement is at and although her form isn’t the best the 23-time grand slam should edge to victory.

Prediction: Serena in straight sets.
