What is the Laver Cup?

In what seems like a never ending array of cups, first one up as the tail end of the season approaches is the Laver Cup. The Laver Cup is a three-day tournament pitting together six top players from Europe against six from the Rest of the World.

Up to 2020, Team Europe will be captained by Bjorn Borg, and of course who else but John McEnroe helms the best of the Rest of the World (let’s just settle on Team World, going forward).

The tournament was named in honour of Rod Laver. Laver is still held in high esteem by many of the modern players as the greatest of all time… why? He won a Grand Slam (all four Slam titles in a calendar year) twice, both as an amateur and a professional.

The players will play singles and pair up in doubles.

Who is behind all this?

The Laver Cup is a joint initiative between Team8, Tennis Australia, the USTA and Jorge Paulo Leman. What started out as a Tennis Australia initiative with Federer’s sports management company Team8, now the USTA sticks its fingers in the pie, with the ATP latching on and sticking it in the official ATP calendar.

This is probably the most significant thing about this glorified exhibition. There might not be points yet associated with this, but the agreement gives access to ATP services, including marketing and social media, along with operational personnel such as officials and physios.

When & Where will it take place

This time around the Palexpo in Geneva will play host to the event, where tickets sold out in record time.
