Kyle Edmund v Matteo Berrettini | Edmund leads H2H 3-0
While the Antwerp defending champion hit a low at sliding out of the tournament where he won his first singles title, Kyle Edmund has a couple more chances to at least close out the season with a win.
A year that started with an injury niggle and others that seemed to plague him throughout the season also saw his trusted coach Fredrik Rosengren retire and leave him a little lost, especially after Mark Hilton suggested they part ways ahead of a very disappointing Asian swing.
It was that swing that did the damage – Edmund had been gathering steam towards the end of last year, reaching the semi-final in Beijing, quarter-final at the Shanghai Masters and then winning the title in Antwerp. Now he cuts a very different figure.
Contrast Matteo Berrettini, who has addressed some of the inconsistencies that he struggled with in the early part of his career. He has improved in areas like his movement, coming forward for example. He has flourished on all surfaces this year and having reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters in his last tournament, his confidence is up.
Edmund is not without weapons. When his serve-forehand one-two punch combo is firing, his style of aggressive play and much improved movement and artillery have seen him fly up the rankings and be mixing it with the world’s best players. But right now, his confidence is shot, and it often shows as soon as sets start to slip away.
He does not have much to defend here. He was a former semi-finalist in 2018 and exited in the second round, so a win here would at least see him stay a little stable in the rankings, with points to gain in the final Master of the year in Paris.
With the prospect of not even making the cut for Leon Smith’s Davis Cup side, he will need to pull out something remarkable against a player whose star is on the rise.
Prediction: Berrettini in straight sets.
Edmund & Berrettini are scheduled second on Centre Court, not before 3:30pm (2:30 BST).
