Andy Murray earned a second top 10 win of the season after knocking out top seed Jannik Sinner in straight sets. It was a blistering start from both players as they went toe-to-toe with each other as they traded explosive forehand groundstrokes. That mini-battle was even and so was the opening set with both players struggling to create break point opportunities.

Sinner had the only break point opportunity in the seventh game but couldn’t convert as some smart Murray play on serve saw him hold for a 4-3 lead. The use of angles from the Brit managed to neutralise some of the Italian’s power as the first set was heading to a tiebreak. Some clever point construction allowed Murray to get ahead in the tiebreak and he never let the lead slip as some more angled forehands forced the errors from Sinner’s racket to take the tiebreak 7-4.

The three-time grand slam champion didn’t stop there as the defensive side of his game was starting to rattle Sinner. On break point down in the third game an erratic, mis-timed forehand fell well wide of its intended mark to give Murray the early break as he continued to extend the rallies.

Once again Murray was winning the forehand battles with perfect angles as he created more break point opportunities. Eventually Murray did break again as he secured one of the best wins of his season to progress into the last eight in Stockholm.

Murray’s clutch serving makes him the favourite here but the Brit will need to be aware of Paul’s impressive stats on return.

Playing styles and prediction

The American has had an impressive last few weeks, notching up wins over Andrey Rublev and in the last round beating the in-form Taylor Fritz. Paul has good athleticism matched with consistently powerful forehands that can outmanoeuvre any opponent on any given day.

Murray will need to create his own tempo and pace at times unlike the Sinner match where he was just redirecting the opposition’s pace. The Brit will need to keep his first serve percentage high to prevent dangerous returns from the American and keep a consistent level throughout. If Murray wants to consistently go deep in tournaments next season these are the type of matches he has to be looking to win.

Prediction: Murray in three sets.
