Kyle Edmund v Ricardas Berankis | Berankis leads H2H 1-0 (ATP Challenger)

In what is most likely to be his last tournament of 2019, Kyle Edmund will face qualifier Ricardas Berankis as he bids to at least equal, if not better his run to the second round of the last Masters 1000 of the year in Paris.

With one spot still empty in the GB team for the new format Davis Cup Finals, it will in all likelihood go to Cameron Norrie, who despite an opening round loss to Milos Raonic, has had some decent form since the US Open.

Meanwhile for Edmund, it has been a frustrating year, which saw irritating injury niggles, his coach Fredrik Rosengren retire, and replacement Mark Hilton chose to part company with him at the start of the Asian swing. With a W-L record of 17-22 over the year, 2019 is a year Edmund would most likely want to forget.

Ordinarily, an ATP Challenger defeat five years ago would tell us nothing about what to expect against Berankis now, and although Edmund’s match against Matteo Berrettini looked to have started well with Edmund taking the first set, he just came up short against the kind of consistency that the Italian had been showing throughout the year.

What Edmund needs is a complete reset – a new coach, and a decent training block behind him. In the meantime, of course on paper he should have more experience at this level of course, but Berankis will have more time on these indoor courts at Bercy.

It would be nice for Edmund to snap this streak and at least close out his year with one win at a Masters level, but with his spot in the GB Davis Cup team likely to be out of reach, one last hurrah might be all we get before Edmund 2.0 in 2020.

Prediction: Edmund in three sets.
