Cameron Norrie v Marton Fucsovics | Norrie leads H2H 1-0

After just falling short of matching last year’s achievement of back to back semi-finals in Atlanta and then Los Cabos, bowing out in just the second round in Mexico, it is time to rack up some points as Cameron Norrie makes his debut at the Masters event in Canada.

First up for the Brit is Marton Fucsovics – and he ought to carry the confidence of a solid win over the more established clay-courter when they played in Monte Carlo earlier this year. It was a great win for the Brit on the dirt, as both players make their debut here.

Also in Norrie’s favour is he has been in action on the hard courts now while Fucsovics chose to spend his time on clay after Wimbledon, and perhaps not a strategy that paid off as he has picked up just one win in that time while Norrie really hit the ground running in Atlanta, and it was unfortunate he ended up on the wrong side of a tight straight setter in Mexico.

Norrie’s patience and big-picture temperament saw him staying toe-to-toe with Fucsovics on the demanding clay, keeping in the long rallies and eventually causing the Hungarian to completely unravel and that smart tennis could serve him very well now.

He has had plenty of chance to make his adjustments from the grass to the hard, and Fucsovics’s hard court starts are not a complete disaster, but it shows his mind-set that he opted for clay for points instead of gearing up his preparation for the autumn hard court swing. What has also impressed is the battling in Norrie – he had a tough start against Jordan Thompson in Atlanta and was unlucky to be edged by Mikhail Kukushkin in Los Cabos.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
