British No. 1 Kyle Edmund continued to display an upturn in his form as he scored a solid win over the No. 12 seed Milos Raonic. The Canadian had been enjoying a return to form himself before injury flared up again needing a medical timeout for a back issue.

Edmund broke in the middle of the first set for an advantage he was able to hold to take the first set comfortably and despite Raonic’s struggles, the second set looked competitive before a commanding break from Edmund in the penultimate game, to love.

This is Edmund’s best run out in Miami, and it comes off the back of a long sting in Indian Wells where he won the Challenger event before the Masters 1000 in his first tournament since struggling with injury at the start of the season.

His reward is a match up with the defending champion John Isner. The American has had a pretty solid season so far after perhaps a shaky start Down Under. He started the year with two first round exits before making three semi-finals in a row in New York, Delray Beach and Acapulco.

We can expect the battle ground to centre on free points on serve with both being more than capable of banging down aces and unreturnables, and almost inevitably – tie-breaks.

The key for Edmund, as he found in his win over the American in the third round of the US Open in 2016, is to move the big guy around. Isner’s serve and heavy forehand combo can be more than matched by Edmund, but if he can draw Isner into the net, and get behind him with some variety, he can do some damage here.

Isner probably comes in to this match as a marginal favourite. He has had more court time, obviously, and has been pretty steady, but Edmund’s confidence is high at the moment. It was a big win for him over Raonic, and this is his best performance – the new Miami location is suiting him.

Prediction: Edmund in three sets.
