Preview: [WC] Jack Draper v Mikhail Kukushkin | H2H: First meeting

Jack Draper will be looking to get off to a dream start to ATP Tour life as he takes on Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round of the Miami Masters. The 2018 Wimbledon Junior finalist has ploughed most of his trade on the Challenger and ITF circuits, compiling a respectable 68% win record in the last twelve months.

The 19-year-old is coming off the back of a disappointing loss in the ITF M15 Sharm El Sheikh event, where he was forced to retire with injury as the top seed. Nevertheless, the euphoria of receiving a wildcard into one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar will certainly ease the pain.

Kukushkin plays a solid, flat baseline game most suited to faster courts. His technique isn’t the most easy on the eye although he is super efficient at what he does and his level stays at quite a steady level throughout a contest. The Kazakh does not have the most explosive shots on the tour, but he uses his groundstrokes to pierce through the service giving his opponents a very low bouncing ball.

The former World no.  39 feels most at home on hard courts, with all four of his top ten victories coming on the surface – the most recent being in 2019 when he knocked Roberto Bautista Agut out of the US Open. However, the 33-year-old has been in some wretched form of late, losing six of his last eight matches.

By being left-handed, Draper automatically presents a different challenge to his opponents. The Brit is very technically sound and possesses weapons on each wing. A clean ball striker, Draper likes to take the initiative in baseline rallies and is capable of finishing a point with any shot.

Prediction

Anything could happen in this contest. On one hand you have a young prodigy eager to claim the victory on his full debut, and then you have an seasoned veteran in desperate need of match wins. Both players will show flashes of brilliance, but I reckon Draper will squeeze though.

Prediction: Draper in three sets.
