Cameron Norrie v Gregoire Barrere | First meeting

Cameron Norrie enjoyed a successful tournament last week, winning three matches to reach the semifinals – dropping one set along the way. Unfortunately for him, Taylor Fritz denied Norrie a second ATP final (after Auckland earlier this year).

Despite his exploits last week, Norrie slipped four places down the rankings to hand over his title as the British No.2 to Dan Evans, who made the last eight in Atlanta. Norrie has been in great form this year and he continues to solidify his place in the top 50. In fact, he has not lost to a player ranked below him since the French Open. The Brit will be confident going into this tournament as he reached the semifinals of this event last year, before losing to Fabio Fognini.

Gregoire Barrere, Norrie’s opponent, is competing for the first time since Wimbledon. The Frenchman came through qualifying at SW19, eventually losing in the second round of the main draw. Barrere is ranked No.111 but has been producing some solid results, especially on the Challenger Tour. The 25-year-old lifted the Quimper challenger trophy and also successfully defended his Lille challenger title this year. Barrere is definitely best suited to hard courts, a surface where he has won 21 of his 29 matches this season.

Both players will be very confident going into the match and it may take them a few games to get used to their opponents styles. Norrie has already begun his post-Wimbledon hard court season, unlike Barrere, and therefore we should see a relatively routine Norrie victory.

Prediction: Norrie in two sets.
