Cameron Norrie def. Gregoire Barrere 7-6(5) 6-0

Straight from his semi-final run in Atlanta, British No. 3 Cameron Norrie kicked off his run in Mexico with a win over Gregoire Barrere. Chasing semi-final points again this week, it was a tight affair in the first set, with Norrie grabbing the initiative early with a break before the first change of ends. Barrere was not without his chances in those early exchanges but could not quite get over the line with his break point chances.

However, he rallied to save the first set point against him as he fought to hold on to his serve, and then went on to break Norrie as he served for the first set, saving two more in the process and it became Norrie’s chances blown as he failed to convert on a couple more break points.

It was a confident start by Norrie, quickly going up 3-0 before the Frenchman broke back twice to take the lead. Norrie wrestled back control of the tie-break winning four points in a row. From that point on, it was all one-way traffic for Norrie who raced through the second set.

Norrie v Mikhail Kukushkin | First meeting

With a very hot and bothered Dan Evans going out early in Washington, there might even be a chance for Norrie to regain his British No. 2 spot, as he faces Mikhail Kukushkin for the first time. It will help that Norrie is used to playing in the US – his time on the college tennis circuit might help with dealing with the conditions and the heat.

He will need that additional stamina as Kukushkin is a player who is very solid on his day, and can keep the ball in play forever. Norrie will need to be patient, build up his points and take his chances, as Kukushkin will make him constantly play an extra ball.

Kukushkin had a bit of a disastrous spell in the clay court swing, before a resurgence on the grass, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
