Whether or not Dan Evans has turned a corner since his most recent run of form remains to be seen, but it is a toss-up as to who might feel they have the hardest task when he takes on a returning Stan Wawrinka after a year beset with injury.

By contrast Evans has shown what he is more than capable of, coming through qualifying at the Australian Open and ending with a very good account of himself against Roger Federer in the second round, before some solid Challenger runs and a second shot at an ATP Tour title. He has a lot of tennis in his legs at the minute though, having played the Indian Wells challenger last week, and two rounds of qualifying already.

Wawrinka was an early casualty at the Australian Open but seemed to find his feet again making the Rotterdam final and the quarter-finals in Acapulco. His aggressive style of play will match up well to Evans, whose variety will possibly make Wawrinka move a little more than he might want.

Experience counts for a lot though, and Wawrinka, the former 2017 finalist, might just be one to watch in the draw. Many remember when Evans pushed him close in a match just over four hours in the third round of the US Open 2016. Evans charged at the net and even had a match point against the Swiss, who would go on and lift the title.

While this is not Flushing Meadows, Wawrinka’s forceful play will need to draw lights out tennis from Evans if he wants to stay in contention.

Prediction: Wawrinka in three sets.

Evans and Wawrinka are scheduled on Stadium 2, not before 12:30pm (8:30pm GMT).
