Kyle Edmund v Daniil Medvedev | Edmund leads H2H 2-1
Kyle Edmund will have another crack at the in-form Russian, Daniil Medvedev, as the two will face off in the first round of Cincinnati. The Brit will look to register more matches under his belt in the last big event before the US Open.
Edmund’s opponent, Medvedev has been one of the standout players since the tour returned to the North American hard courts. The World No. 8 has gone an impressive 8-2 during the US Open series, reaching two finals from two events (Washington and Montreal). It has taken remarkable performances from Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal to defeat the Russian during this swing.
Due to his efforts last week, the Medvedev has become the new Russian No. 1 and he is now in sixth position in the Race to London. Medvedev managed to secure two top 10 victories last week (over Dominic Thiem and Karen Khachanov) to reach the final in Canada so he will be carrying a tremendous amount of confidence going into his clash with Edmund.
The Russian plays a very intriguing style of tennis and he teases his opponents into uncharacteristic errors with his no-pace shots. A victory over Medvedev is always a massive mental victory and an abundance of patience is needed to get past him. Medvedev brushed Edmund aside 6-3, 6-0 in just 59 minutes last week so the Edmund coaching team will have to analyse what went wrong for the Brit.
Aside from their most recent meeting, Edmund managed to get the better of Medvedev twice, although both matches were over a year ago. The British No. 1 is going to need to serve much better than he did last week. Edmund managed to win just 57% of points behind his first serve, and only 25% of his second serve points. You simply cannot afford to do this against a top ten player who does not miss. That being said, Edmund has the game to defeat the Russian and he has proven that on two separate occasions.
Medvedev has played the maximum amount of matches possible in the last two weeks and maybe fatigue will start creeping into his game – which is a very physical style. The Brit may need to maneouver his opponent around the court with his forehand to really see how much Medvedev has in the tank. The longer the match goes, the better for Edmund and he may be able to get revenge.
Prediction: Edmund in three sets.
Edmund and Medvedev are scheduled on Stadium 3, not before 2pm (7pm BST).
