Brit of the Week

Ali Collins entered the ITF event in Spain, the Brit was unseeded. In the first round the Brit was against Spaniard Andrea Redondo Gutierrez. Despite having the home crowd behind her, the Spaniard was unable to prevent Collins from dominating the match. The Brit lost only two games to move into the next round 6-1, 6-1.

In the second round Collins was up against another Spaniard, Almudena Sanz-Llaneza Fernandez. The Brit once again totally dominated the match. Sanz-Llaneza Fernandez just could not match the game of Collins, and soon found herself on the wrong end of a bagel set. The Brit moved into the quarter-final in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

The quarter-final saw the Brit against the third seed Marina Yudanov. The Swede was the toughest opponent to date. Yudanov stayed with Collins in the first set, until eventually the Swede was broken. Collins kept the pressure on and in the second set dominated to move into the semi-final in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

In the semi-final the Brit was against the top seed Daria Mishina. Collins broke the Russian in the first set and took the lead. Mishina re-grouped in the second set and fought back to level the match, breaking the Brit for the first time. Collins was not to be denied the final spot however, and stayed toe to toe with the Russian. Right at the end of the set it was Collins who broke through to book a final spot 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

The final saw the Brit against fifth seed Angela Fita Boluda. Collins fought to stay with the seed, however the Spaniard was just too good, breaking the Brit in both sets. Fita Boluda ended the run of Collins, much to the delight of the home crowd. The Spaniard took the title in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
