Brit of the Week

Mark Whitehouse entered the ITF event in Norma, Oklahoma. The Brit was the second seed in both disciplines. In the first round Whitehouse was drawn against Brady Draheim. The American was no match for Whitehouse, who demolished Draheim. The Brit only lost three games to move into the second round 6-2, 6-1.

The second round saw the seed facing Alexander Klintcharov. The Kiwi got off to the better start and broke the serve of the Brit. Whitehouse was not able to break back and was soon down a set. However, the seed managed to re-group. Taking the game to Klintcharov the Brit secured the required break of serves in the next sets. The Kiwi was unable to get back on terms and it was the seed who progressed 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the quarter-final Whitehouse was facing Andrew Fenty. The unseeded American fought hard in the first set, however the Brit was too good and broke to lead. In the second set Fenty had nothing left to try, and the seed dominated to move into the semi-final 6-4, 6-2.

The semi-final saw the Brit against the fifth seed Austin Rapp. The American kept the first set close, until towards the end when Whitehouse made the breakthrough. In the second set Rapp tried to level up the match, however the Brit was having non of it and broke to book a place in the final 6-4, 6-2.

In the final Whitehouse was against Ezekiel Clark. The American sixth seed stayed toe to toe with the Brit and forced a tiebreak. The breaker saw the second seed edge ahead to take the lead. In the second set Whitehouse was on top and secured the break of serve to take the title in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4.

In the doubles, Whitehouse teamed up with David Fox and the pair were the second seeds. The first round saw the Brits against Abraham Asaba & Andrew Fenty. The seeds were just too strong for the Ghanaian/American pairing and moved swiftly into the next round losing only three games 6-1, 6-2.

In the quarter-final the Brits were against Vasile-Alexandru Ghilea & Matthew Rodriguez. The Romanian/American pair were unable to cope with the game of the seeds and found themselves broken early. It was more of the same in the second set with Whitehouse & Fox going on to the semi-final in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

The semi-final pitched the Brits against the third seeds Pierce Rollins & Preston Touliatos. The American pair got the jump on Whitehouse & Fox and broke their serve to move into the lead. The Brits managed to re-group and take the second set forcing a match tiebreak. In the match tiebreak the second seeds edged ahead and booked a spot in the final 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

In the final the Brits were against the top seeds Alexander Cozbinov & Ricardo Rodríguez. Whitehouse & Fox secured the break in the first set and took the lead. The Moldovan/Venezuelan re-grouped in the second set breaking the Brits to level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak the Brits secured the win and lifted the title 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
