Dan Evans returns to action after a stellar week in Monte Carlo where he defeated four former Masters 1000 finalist sen route to the semi-finals. The week also saw the Brit secure the biggest win of his career, defeating the World No. 1, Novak Djokovic, in the third round.

Going into the 2021 clay court season, Evans had won just four matches on the surface throughout his career. He will be looking for his fifth win on the dirt in 2021 when he faces Corentin Moutet in Barcelona.

The 30-year-old will take on the Frenchman for a place in the last sixteen. Moutet is currently sat at 75 in the rankings and has gone under the radar in 2021. The 22-year-old is 6-2 in main draw matches this season and continues to impress as he quietly goes about his business.

Like many of his compatriots, Moutet plays with an incredible amount of flair. The World No. 75 is a tricky lefty who loves to hit his forehand as much as possible, often running around his considerably weaker backhand wing.

The Frenchman is very nimble and has no trouble covering the court when on the defence. Moutet can often wander mentally in matches and can force the play a little too much at times.

Despite all of his creativity on the court, Moutet does try his best to avoid the forecourt and this is an element of the game Evans can exploit beautifully with a short slice. That being said, the Frenchman didn’t encounter much difficulty when he won the pairs only meeting at last years’ US Open.

Prediction

Although the Brit enjoyed a memorable week in Monte Carlo, he cannot take anything for granted here in Barcelona. Moutet is a man in form, comfortable on the clay and has a winning record against his next opponent – making this an extremely tough matchup for Evans. This contest could really go either way and a few points may prove to be the difference.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
