By Glenys Furness

  • Neil Pauffley teamed up with Peter Bothwell in Barnstaple
  • Top seeds claimed title without playing another seed.
BARNSTAPLE, UK – Neil Pauffley & Peter Bothwell were the top seeds in ITF Futures, they lost two sets en-route to the title, and didn’t face another seed.

Neil Pauffley & Peter Bothwell teamed up in Barnstaple and were the top seeds. In the first round they faced an all British pairing of Joshua Paris & Ryan Storrie. The Brit/Irish pairing got an early break in the first set and the all Brit pairing were unable to get back into the set. Paris & Storrie pushed the top seeds in the second set, but Pauffley & Bothwell managed to keep on top and get the break just when needed to seal the win 6-3, 7-5.

The quarter-final had the seeds against another all Brit pairing of Joshua Rose & Barnaby Smith. The unseeded pairing got off to a fast start and broke Pauffley & Bothwell. The Brit/Irish pair could not get back on terms in the set and it was gone. The second set was much easier for the top seeds and they only lost two games to level up the match. A final set match tiebreak would decide the winners, the top seeds took the lead and never looked back, booking their spot in the semi-final 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.

In the semi-final Pauffley & Bothwell found themselves against Oli Golding & Florian Hagmann. The Brit/German kept pace with the top seeds until the Brit/Irish pair got the break in set, Golding & Hagmann were not able to break back and the set was gone. The second set followed the same pattern with the top seeds getting the break and booking the spot in the final 6-4, 6-4.

The final had the Brit/Irish against non seeded all Brit pairing Robert Carter & Ryan Peniston. The top seeds looked to be in full control as they once again broke early to take the set. The second set was much closer as Carter & Peniston forced a tiebreak which they won, meaning a match tiebreak would be needed to settle the title. The top seeds once again got the lead and took the title 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-6.
