- Andy Murray vs Alexander Bublik [LL]
LONDON, UK – Andy Murray‘s preparation for the defence of his title is in disarray, but he will hope that his hip problem disappears in time for his first challenge on Day 1 of Wimbledon.
Andy Murray vs Alexander Bublik [LL] H2H: First meeting
Never has Andy Murray entered a Grand Slam event with so much doubt and so much anxiety over the outcome of his two weeks at a major. Unusually he fell at the first round to Jordan Thompson at Queens, which is a tournament he usually plays ever so well at. The preparation took another turn for the worst when a hip injury prevented him from playing in the exhibition event in Hurlingham, so many are pondering over Murray having enough competitive action on the grass ready for Wimbledon. Only Murray can really answer those doubters.
When Murray has performed well at Wimbledon and won his two Wimbledon titles it has followed great runs at Queens. This year he has a single match under his belt in preparation to the most important two weeks of any season of Murray’s.
The current turmoil surrounding Murray and the obvious uncertainty and unrest suggests that reaching the second week of this year’s Wimbledon would be a very good result considering how unlucky he has been in the prep for the third Grand Slam of the year.
Murray’s first test in his defence for the Wimbledon title will be Russian-born Kazakhstani Alexander Bublik. Bublik arrives as a lucky loser, having lost in the third round of Qualifying in Roehampton and has yet to break the World’s Top 100 yet in his career thus far.
Bublik does have issues with the consistency of his serve and has the tendency to make a lot of double faults, which will be magnified when playing one of the best returners of the ball in tennis. It should also be interesting to see how Bublik responds and reacts to playing on the Centre Court, which is a surreal, unique experience in itself. Murray has the experience of already playing as a defending champion of this trophy at the 2014 Wimbledon and should have grown accustomed to that particular sensation.
