  • So much for cruise control for Rafael Nadal – his campaign to regain the World No. 1 spot met its end to the delight of the Canadian crowd at the hands of wild-card Denis Shapovalov.

  • There were scary moments for Roger Federer too after dropping the first set to David Ferrer. Before closing out his 17th straight win over the Spaniard.
  • Alexander Zverev got his first tour win over long time rival since their junior days, Nick Kyrgios.
  • The World No. 1 spot comes up for battle next week at Cincinnati – Nadal had to reach the semi-finals here to claim it this week.

  • 2016 champion Simona Halep was in impressive form as she brushed aside Barbora Strycova, amidst some strident support from her Romanian fans.
  • It is still a long process for Angelique Kerber who lost in somewhat meek style to a returning Sloane Stephens who advanced to the quarter-finals.
  • Venus Williams had a landmark first win in seven attempts in Toronto, but she bowed out to No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina
  • Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza rounded out the field with a bit of a battle against Ashleigh Barty to reach the final eight.
