- Heather Watson saw her hopes of defending her fourth round points from last year fade at the hands of qualifier Patricia Maria Tig. The Brit now looks certain to drop to being the British No. 3 behind Naomi Broady, who lost in the first round of qualies.
- Genie Bouchard last won a round in Miami in 2013, and fell to Ashleigh Barty who was making her debut in Miami.
- American hopes got a boost when Bethanie Mattek-Sands picked up her first main-draw win this season putting out Katerina Siniakova.
- No. 2 seed Karolina Pliskova will start her campaign on Thursday, along with other high seeds Garbiñe Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska

ATP Miami Results and Quick Hits
- It was a bad day for the British men – all three in the draw (Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund and qualifier Aljaz Bedene) fell in the first round.
- Evans picked up a point penalty for audible obscenities, Bedene retired 0-4 down in the second set, and Edmund served for the match twice before unravelling.
- The real star of the show was… an iguana who decided that he wanted a court side seat to the match between Malek Jaziri and Tommy Haas (h/t @doublefault28)
