WTA Indian Wells Results & Quick Hits

  • British woes continued as the World No. 11 and top Brit Johanna Konta bowed out in unusually error-strewn form to Caroline Garcia. The Brit’s usually fairly reliable backhand seemed to crumble as a dominant start soon turned to a confidence sapping turn, allowing Garcia to level the match. The tie-break was all one way traffic for the Frenchwoman who was her first to book her place in the fourth round.
  • There were stern tests too for Garbiñe Muguruza who almost punched her ticket out of the desert at the hands of American wildcard Kayla Day. The former junior No. 1 gave the home crowd a lot to cheer as she raced to a first set lead, and almost put herself in the position of serving for the match but Muguruza kept her nerve to level a tight second set before a more commanding decider.
  • Another seed in trouble was Dominika Cibulkova on the wrong end of a first set dominated by Kristyna Pliskova before battling tooth and nail for two tense tie-break sets to book her place in the fourth round.
  • Back to business for Angelique Kerber on Monday as we start to gallop towards the business end of the week – she kicks things off first thing, but post lunch brings on Lucie Safarova and Venus Williams. If Williams brings the tenacity she showed against Jelena Jankovic in her opener, we could be in for treat.
  • Night match action also brings us a potential corker of a match with Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka in a rematch of their tense US Open encounter of last year.

ATP Indian Wells Results and Quick Hits

  • Another Brit bit the dust as Kei Nishikori effectively handled Dan Evans, sending him out of his debut at Indian Wells in straight sets. The Brit started promisingly enough with an immediate break but Nishikori pegged him back before keeping the aggressive baseliner at bay.
  • He was followed by Kyle Edmund’s plucky attempts to give Novak Djokovic some pause for thought, The Brit certainly had the crowd on his side as he battled back to force a tie-break for a chance to level the second set, but Djokovic survived to keep the draw of doom or glory active.
  • Talking of that section of the draw, if Rafael Nadal was impressive in his straight sets win over Guido Pella, Australian Open champion Roger Federer was dominant. He was not hanging about, shooting past Stephane Robert in less than an hour.
  • Coming up on Monday’s schedule, Stan Wawrinka looks to clean up in a draw that has been decimated. We have a Dominic Thiem and Zverev encounter – but it is Mischa Zverev who will try his hand against the Austrian.
