Tournament Results & Quick Hits
- Rafael Nadal coasted into the third round as he breezed past Aljaz Bedene in just his third match since his return after a hip injury side-lined him in the quarter-final of the Australian Open. Having helped Spain into the Davis Cup semi-finals, he made a triumphant tour return. He will face Karen Khachanov who also looked commanding in his R2 match against Gilles Simon. Nadal leads their head to head 2-0.
- Novak Djokovic faced a stern test against Borna Coric. The young Croatian was certainly match sharp compared to Djokovic and the two-time Monte Carlo champion admitted he might still be a little rusty, but after weathering a tie-break, Djokovic capitalised on a few wayward errors, lifting his level, and defending well against a final flurry, needing 10 match points eventually to advance. He will face Dominic Thiem, whose own comeback from injury was tested with a long opening match of his own against Andrey Rublev. It’s difficult to know who will come out of this one, and while Djokovic leads 5-1 in their head to head, Thiem got the last win on clay, last year in the Roland Garros quarter-final.
- Kei Nishikori has been struggling with issues with his wrist but closed out a straight sets win against Daniil Medvedev to face Kyle Edmund’s conqueror Andreas Seppi who battled through another three setter.
