Angelique Kerber def. Johanna Konta 1-6 6-1 6-3
Kerber made an uncharacteristically slow start as fended off break points on her own serve, but moreover converted on her fourth try in Kerber’s first service game. Jumping out to a 5-0 lead, Kerber roused herself enough to fire down a service game to love, and made Konta work for the first set, saving five set points before the Brit wrapped up the first set.
In almost a mirror image of the first set, it was Kerber’s chance to make the most of a dip from Konta to jump out to a 3-0 lead. While there was no long hard fought games to see out the second set, Kerber kept the pressure on to take the second set 6-1.
The momentum stayed with Kerber as she broke the Brit at the start of the decider. Having seen her serving percentage drop to allow Kerber back in, Konta settled the ship briefly as she broke Kerber back to level at 3-3, only to lose her serve straight away.
Once Kerber had her nose in front, she took off at a tilt for the finish, breaking Konta for the match, and a match up with World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
There were many positives for konta to take away from this though. She got a couple of good wins under her belt, and exacted a small measure of revenge over Bernarda Pera who dumped her out of the Australian Open in the second round.
Konta is next expected to play in Indian Wells, which takes place between 8-18 March.
