British No. 1 Johanna Konta arrives in Paris with her best set of clay court results this season at a tour level. Although we need to accept that clay will never be her best surface, there is no doubt she has made some pretty big improvements since working with Michael Joyce at the start of the year.
In Australia she credited the fact that Joyce being an ex-player was a significant factor in her choice, but it has taken a while for the confidence to improve. A win in Madrid, swiftly followed by yet another loss to tricky Bernarda Pera was met with good humour. She had played well against the free-swinging American, and took that confidence into a good couple of wins in Rome, before losing to reigning French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
That is not to say she does not have a tricky draw. Even though she has a 2-0 leading head to head over the feisty Yulia Putintseva, it will be a tricky draw against the Kazakh who has also been picking up wins in Istanbul and Nurnberg.
Venus Williams is beatable if she can get past a first meeting potentially against Jennifer Brady, but to try and exact some revenge on Ostapenko will be a challenge. The Latvian has taken everything that has been thrown at her regarding her title defence with ease. Of course we will see just how the pressure tells when she actually has to step on court.
A third round run would be excellent, a fouth round run would be a bonus, but on Elina Svitolina’s current form, it might be a case of the line being drawn here, no further.
