PERTH, AUSTRALIA – Australia Green have their eyes on the Hopman Cup Final after clinching a good win over Great Britain.
First up was showman Nick Kyrgios against Andy Murray – having never taken a set off the Brit, Kyrgios boosted his confidence with a straight sets win over the World No. 2 who did at times look a little inhibited.
It very much looked like it was going to be a complete rout for the Aussies, as Daria Gavrilova edged Heather Watson for the first set, before the Brit, currently being aided by Murray’s mother and Fed Cup captain Judy, fought back to romp through the second set.
The third set saw the momentum shift back with four consecutive breaks of serve at one stage as finally the pendulum stuck on Britain’s side of the court as Watson reeled off four games in a row from 3-5 down to give Britain a fighting chance.
She said to HopmanCup.com: “It was definitely difficult. I knew it would be. “Dasha’s a great player. We practice a lot actually and we always have epic practices.”
The epicness continued in the mixed doubles, as the Brits fought their way back into the match after the Aussies took a comfortable lead. Having battled their way to a second set tie-break, the Brits ran away with it, forcing a thrilling decider!
The Brits were on the back foot from the start of the match tie-break as the Aussies built up a 5-1 lead and although the visitors managed a flurry of points to level the score, they soon slipped back.
They caught up once more to 9-9 before the Aussies sealed a win that could see them in the final.
