Brit of the Week

Harriet Dart entered the ITF event in Ilkley knowing she had a wildcard into Wimbledon and wouldn’t need to go through pre-qualifying or qualifying. The Ilkley grass event attracted some well known names including Kaia Kanepi who was the top seed.

In the first round Dart was drawn against Richèl Hogenkamp. The Dutch player was no match for the Brit however, as Dart took control of the match early. In the first set Hogenkamp tried to stay with the Brit, but Dart broke serve to take the lead. In the second set the Brit dominated and didn’t lose a game to move into the next round 6-3, 6-0.

The second round saw the Brit up against Russian Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian had knocked out Arantxa Rus the fifth seed in the previous round, so the match on paper would be tricky. Dart was on a roll though, and once again managed to break in the first set to edge ahead. The second set the Brit dominated as the Russian only managed to get one game on the board. Dart moved into the quarter-final in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

In the quarter-final Dart was against Dayana Yastremska. The first set was very tight, as both Dart and the Ukrainian went toe to toe. Yastremska managed to break the Brit right at the end of the set to take the lead. In the second set Dart  kept everything tight, and forced a tiebreak. The Ukrainian was not able to get on top in the breaker and Dart levelled up. The final set saw Yastremska grab the break of serve that sealed the win over Dart 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3
