LONDON, ENGLAND- Chelsea are out of the UEFA Champions League after a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint Germain.

Goals from Adrien Rabiot and Zlatan Ibrahimovic cancelled out Diego Costa’s strike to secure a 2-1 win on the night for the Ligue 1 leaders.

It is only Guus Hiddink’s second defeat since taking the helm at the end of 2015, both of them inflicted by PSG

The French side got off to a flying start akin to the first leg and took the lead when Rabiot tapped in from close range off Ibrahmovic’s flick. But Chelsea came back strong and were rewarded when Costa turned Thiago Silva inside out before slotting home with his left foot.

Chelsea had an opportunity after the break to level the tie but Costa’s shot was blocked. The Blues would suffer a big blow when the Spaniard was forced off with injury and was replaced by Bertrand Traore on the hour mark.

Ibrahimovic found himself through on goal just minutes later but a heavy touch forced the ball away from the goal and the Swede had to settle for a corner.

As time ticked, the pressure intensified for Chelsea. Willian’s 20 yard effort was stopped by Kevin Trapp and Eden Hazard’s rebound suffered the same result.

OInstead it would be the French side that dealt the deadly blow. Thiago Motta’s beautiful lobbed pass found Angel Di Maria on the wing who crossed low to Ibrahimovic in the centre, and he made no mistake tapping in from close range.

The second goal for PSG killed the game as Chelsea deflated. For all the hard work to try overturn the first leg deficit, they found the quality of Laurent Blanc’s side to be too much. The French side proved they can hurt you from anywhere and they easily saw out the final whistle to book their place in the quarter finals.

It was a masterclass in clinical finishing, with Ibrahimovic in particular playing a huge role in the win. With the Swede rumoured to be potentially moving to the Premier League , one of the countries biggest sides got a glimpse of what he could do if he was ever to arrive in England.

The defeat leaves Chelsea with only the FA Cup to fight for in terms of trophies. PSG, having pretty much already secured the Ligue 1 title will move into the last eight as one of the favourites to take home the title.

The Champions League returns in a week for Manchester City vs Dynamo Kiev.
