MONTERREY, MEXICO – Naomi Broady will look to level her head to head against Timea Babos when they clash in the second round of WTA Monterrey.
Naomi Broady v Timea Babos – H2H: Babos leads 2-1
British No. 2 Naomi Broady started her campaign with a solid win against CiCi Bellis in a match that swung back and forth. First blood went to the American, but Broady fought back to level at 4-4 but the see-sawing was in full effect in the tie-break swapping mini-breaks.
Broady saved a set point and squandered one of her own before nabbing it on her second try. Psychologically this felt a huge step and in a competitive battle of wills, Broady needed just the one early break to keep hold of her advantage to close out a good win with a player who has had a good run of form this year.
Before we wring our hands in unproductive dismay at the head-to-head with Timea Babos, it is worth noting that the Hungarian’s two wins over Broady came in 2009 and 2011 on the lower levels of the ITF circuit.
Indeed the most recent win came in Wimbledon, to Broady where she came from a set down, edged a tough tie-break to level the match and then completely dominated the higher-ranked player.
Babos fairly ripped through her opener against qualifier Lesley Kerkhove for the loss of just four games. The Hungarian has had mixed fortunes here. She won the title in 2012 and made the quarter-finals the year after, but her recent visits have not yielded as much joy.
She likes to play at quite a clip and we can expect to see another ball-battering affair. With her doubles prowess we can expect to see her try to move Broady around a lot more rather than let the Brit swing for the bases from the baseline.
Based on Babos’ opener this is a tough ask for Broady.
Prediction: Babos in three sets.
