- Aljaz Bedene is defeated by Fabio Fognini in Hamburg
- The Italian prevailed 6-4, 7-5
- He will face Lucas Pouille in the semi finals
HAMBURG, GERMANY- Aljaz Bedene’s hopes of a first ATP 500 semi-final were dashed as the Brit fell in straight sets to eighth seed Fabio Fognini.
The Italian needed 90 minutes to dispatch the British number two 6-4, 7-5 and advance to the semi-finals where he will face Lucas Pouille.
After defeating Spaniards Daniel Gimeno Traver and Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets, Bedene found himself within two winnable matches of his first ATP 500 final. The inform Benoit Paire had fallen to compatriot Pouille in an upset earlier on in the day, and the ever enigmatic Fognini would provide an interesting challenge.
The 28 year old is a former champion in Hamburg, but did not look the part in the early proceedings as he would be the first to be broken. Bedene’s lead did not last long however, as the ever un-predictable Fognini would break straight back. The Brit would lose serve again at 4-4, before the Italian served the opening set out to 30 and in the process give himself a big advantage.
The match would stay with serve throughout the majority of the second set with neither player willing to give an inch. Bedene would earn at point at 5-4, but Fognini would save it and hold serve. The world number 32 sensed that now was the time to strike, and he carved two break point opportunities at 5-5. The Brit managed to save them both, but he found himself under more pressure as the Italian would earn another shot at the break. Third time proved to be a charm with Bedene’s resistance and serve being broken.
Fognini would easily serve out the match to book his semi-final place, and send the British number out crashing out of the tournament. Never the less, it was a good tournament for Bedene who continues his bid for a top 50 finish at the end of the year. He is up to 40th in the live race rankings.
