Cameron Norrie v Marcel Granollers [Q] | First Meeting
After a real purple patch in the hard-court summer where Norrie reached back to back semi-finals (Atlanta and Los Cabos), he backed it up with a good start in China with the Shenzhen quarter-final, but struggled to make quite the same impact in Beijing and Shanghai.
Granollers is a long way from the form that took him into the Top 20 back in 2012, and perhaps now he is more known for his doubles prowess as he is just inside the Top 100. However, he comes in with a lot of matches at the Challenger levels this year, including reaching the Tiburon Challenger last month.
Norrie can expect Granollers to use his forehand and follow the stroke into the net, and his doubles skills will test Norrie’s movement around the court. Norrie can do a bit of everything – functional serve, can mix up his pace, and he has worked a lot on his forehand, to complement the backhand side he tends to favour.
However, sometimes, perhaps when he is the one expected to win, he can run out of ideas if tested. Granollers is nowhere as consistent as he used to be when he was a Top 20 player, but what he does have is experience. Granollers is coming in pretty match sharp as well as a couple of qualifying rounds in Antwerp under his belt.
Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
Norrie & Granollers are scheduled on Court 1 not before 5pm (4pm BST).
