 Zhang Shuai
Zhang could not quite capitalise on home advantage in the first tournament of the year in Shenzhen, picking up one win but only advancing a round. Coming up for her might be wild-card Eugenie Bouchard, who starts her season here, but the hapless Canadian has yet to get a back to back win since Washington last summer.
 Elise Mertens
The Belgian made quite the impact at the Hopman Cup. In a great competitive battle with Angelique Kerber, it was was easily one of the best quality matches of the team invitational event, and the Belgians were unlucky not to make it to the final.
 Sorana Cirstea
The feisty Romanian draws Britain’s Heather Watson in the opening round. A former champion here, Watson is in good need of some solid results, and her results against Cirstea should give her some hope (not to mention another good couple of qualifying wins).
 Alizé Cornet
The 2016 champion started the year well with a run to the Brisbane quarter-finals, but looks set to meet Shenzhen finalist Katerina Siniakova if they make it to the quarter-finals.
The Hobart International takes place between 7-13 January.
