Jack Sock [16] vs Stan Wawrinka [2] H2H: First meeting

The first of our picks of the most appealing matches of Day 4 at the Canada Masters is Stan Wawrinka vs Jack Sock.

Wawrinka impressed on his return to the court following an early exit at Wimbledon. The Swiss No.2 is having one of his typical seasons on the ATP tour and currently sits inside the Top 5 rankings as a result.

Sock, who achieved a career high ranking through reaching the Auckland final at the beginning of the year, will expect big results in the wake of the US Open in a month’s time. Like Wawrinka, Sock can be extremely overwhelming as an opponent when he is firing and feeling great about his tennis – Wawrinka will be fully aware of the problems that Sock can cause on a hard court surface.

Wawrinka has the edge in this contest and I think he will get the better of Sock in two sets.

Prediction: Wawrinka in two sets.

Gael Monfils [10] vs David Goffin [7] H2H: First meeting

Although there is still a lot of tennis to be played between now and the World Tour Finals, this match up could have a great impact on whether either player eventually qualifies for the prestigious event in November.

Both players are on the cusp of the Top 8 in the ATP Race. A good showing in the Canada Masters could provide a platform for one of these players to be part of the ‘Elite Eight.’

In this match up we will witness the perfect construction of tennis points from both. Goffin and Monfils have the necessary tools to impose powerful tennis when required, but in many moments, it will be a demonstration of which player can build the points better. The Belgian likes to take the ball early and on the rise, but Monfils is one of the greater defensive players on tour, which sets up a fantastic match in Toronto.

Prediction: Monfils in 3 sets.

Novak Djokovic [1] vs Radek Stepanek [Q] H2H: 11-1 Djokovic

Djokovic dominates this head-to-head, but Stepanek has shown enough character and flamboyance in previous meetings to suggest that he can get under the skin of the World No.1 in this night session encounter.

Stepanek is still producing some fine tennis at the age of 37, as he currently is situated inside the Top 40.

Djokovic should prevail victor in this Round 3 match, but I would not be surprised if Stepanek was able to get a set off the top-seeded Serb.

Prediction: Djokovic in 3 sets.
