Lourdes Dominguez Lino def. Laura Robson 5-7, 7-6(9), 6-1
Starting her 2013 clay season with a career high ranking of 39, and taking over the mantle of British no. 1, Laura Robson suffered a first round defeat at the hands of Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino, at the BNP Paribas Karowice Open, Poland.
The pair had met previously in 2012, in Beijing, where Dominguez Lino got the better of Robson, in straight but close sets.
For the first two sets, the story was the same.
Robson hit three double-faults serving for the first set at 5-2, giving the Spaniard a route back in to the match, but finished the set with to take it 7-5.
Robson went down a break early in the second set, but was able to break Dominguez Lino twice for the second set to go to a tie-break.
Robson went from saving a set point, to having match point, before the Spaniard clawed back the deficit, to level the match 7-6(9).
The pair traded breaks at the start of the third, but it would be Dominguez Lino who would break again to move ahead 4-1.
Robson’s campaign ended two games later.
Next up for Robson will be the Fed Cup tie in Argentina, as GB fights for a place in World Group II, for the second time in a row.
