WTA Charleston Results & Quick Hits

  • Match of the day had to be the Round Two clash between former Charleston champions Jelena Jankovic and Sam Stosur. Clay is a surface that suits the games of these tour veterans, but Stosur was in no mood to give more ground to the Serbian, who had the better of her in the last few encounters. Stosur battered past the former World No. 1 for the loss of just four games.
  • Rain had caused the schedule to shuffle around, but finally top seed Madison Keys will get a chance to flex her clay court muscles. Earlier on Tuesday Shelby Rogers came through a tough battle to book her spot against compatriot Keys.

WTA Monterrey Results and Quick Hits

  • What a nail-biter! Heather Watson gained just her fourth WTA Tour-level win in a hard fought fight against Nina Stojanovic, including one spectacular racquet smash with the sheer frustration at being edged in a tie-break where she had two match points. Between the highly entertaining sessions with her mother Michelle filling in as her coach, and some fighting spirit against an unpredictable foe, Watson lives to fight another day – she faces No. 6 seed and wild-card Ekaterina Makarova.
  • World No. 1 Angelique Kerber was put to the test by tour veteran on her farewell year, Francesca Schiavone. The Italian took the first set, leaving the German to dig out some determined tennis to close out the win.
  • Naomi Broady is back in action – she faces No. 5 seed Timea Babos, who was in startlingly efficient form in her opener. That being said, Broady has the latest win over the Hungarian (on the grass at Wimbledon).
