ATP Brisbane Results & Quick Hits

  • It has been a long wait but finally defending champion Milos Raonic got his campaign underway with a commanding win over Diego Schwartzman. Now working with Richard Krajicek, Raonic will line up against his former coach, who is now assisting Rafael Nadal.
  • Nadal steamed past Mischa Zverev and handed Raonic a loss when they met at the end of last year at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships – but that was an exhibition, so this will be a true test of where Nadal’s confidence levels are.
  • All four seeds in play came through today’s play with Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka the only seeds left in the bottom of the draw.
  • Kyle Edmund will face No. 2 seed Wawrinka on Friday.

WTA Brisbane Results & Quick Hits

  • Who would be a top seed on the women’s side? Much like Auckland yesterday, the No. 1 and 2 seeds were bundled out by inspired performances – Angelique Kerber looked ill at ease for much of the match, and Dominika Cibulkova seemed to lack sharpness.
  • Also impressive was Garbine Muguruza who had an up and down season last year, but seems to have gotten 2017 off on the right foot.

ATP Doha Results & Quick Hits

  • Andy Murray racked up his 27th win, but again had a battle on his hands against Nicolas Almagro. In what felt like a gruelling three-setter, he beat the Spaniard in a tight two-setter. He will face Tomas Berdych.
  • Novak Djokovic still looked to be unhappy with the blistery conditions as he eased past Radek Stepanek, but felt that his performance was going in the right direction. He will face Fernando Verdasco, who outlasted Ivo Karlovic’s barrage of heavy serves.

WTA Shenzhen Results & Quick Hits

  • It was another three set battle for Johanna Konta as she faced Kristyna Pliskova – similar playing style of course to her higher ranked twin Konta worked hard to stay in the Czech’s service games as well as losing a heartbreaker of a second set tie-break for Pliskova to level. She got the single decisive break she needed and kept the Czech at bay to book her place in the semi-final.
  • Katerina Siniakova showed her win over former champion Simona Halep was no flash in the pan as she eased past Nina Stojanovic to face Konta as she targets a third WTA tour level final – the Czech has yet to claim a title at that level.
  • There was less good news for top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska – despite levelling after the first set got away from her swiftly, she had no answer against No. 8 seed Alison Riske.

WTA Auckland Results & Quick Hits

  • After losing both the Serena and Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki also exited stage left after coming up short against Julia Goerges. Despite dominating in the first set, the German registered her second straight win over the Dane and tipped the seedings upside down – Wozniacki will have surely fancied her chances of starting the year with a title with the both Williams sisters out of the picture.
  • Jelena Ostapenko sent Serena Williams’ conqueror packing, while Naomi Osaka, who advanced via Venus’ withdrawal also had to retire – with a left wrist injury.
WTA Auckland $226,750 5 Jan

ATP Chennai Results & Schedule

  • With Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund carving their way through the draw, Aljaz Bedene has been quitly doing the same at a tournament that seems to suit him well at the start of the season. Three tight tie-break sets were another battle for the Brit as he books his place in the semi-finals.
  • Another player who seems to like the conditions here is No. 2 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who eased through into the final four.
