Tournament Results & Quick Hits

  • It looked like being a mouth-watering encounter and it did not disappoint. Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic toiled in the Monte Carlo sun with the Serbian looking in great form to begin with, jumping out to a 4-1 lead before being pegged back in the first set. Djokovic battled to take the first set in the tie-break, but Thiem rallied to finish the second set at a sprint with a couple of breaks at the end before a taut decider. A great match and another test for Thiem as he faces Rafael Nadal in the quarter-final but a lot of good things for Djokovic to take from this.
  • Grigor Dimitrov had to come from a set down to beat Philipp Kohlschreiber as he looks to be finding some form once more, and we are denied a Brothers Zverev showdown as Richard Gasquet became the first Frenchman in the Open Era with 500 career singles wins.
  • Kei Nishikori started well against Andreas Seppi before dropping the second set and really digging deep to come through to his first quarter-final in Monte Carlo.
  • Flying quietly under the radar is David Goffin after a freak eye accident earlier this year – he will face doubles partner Dimitrov in the quarter-finals.
  • Pick of the matches tomorrow has to be Nadal v Thiem, who breezed past Karen Khachanov. Thiem has beaten him on clay last year in Rome. They met here a couple of years ago, and Thiem pushed Nadal in the first set but he is going to have to play his best tennis to get past Nadal. We also have a US Open 2014 rematch between Marin Cilic and Nishikori
