Dominic Thiem v David Goffin | Goffin leads 6-3
However there are of course a few complications. Thiem’s form coming into the tournament has not been great and his play has been frustrating to watch. He has not exactly impressed at all with wild swinging, curious shot selection and his trademark backhand often missing in action.
Add to that a bit of a deficit against Goffin in theor head to head, although their more recent encounters to reflect Thiem having improved a lot over the past few years, and their last indoor hard court encounter when the way of the Austrian.
Perhaps the other little wrinkle in the ointment is the David Cup looming over Goffin. The Belgian scored the biggest win of his career beating Rafael Nadal, who could not get his knee right in time, but his match against Grigor Dimitrov was so far the biggest let-down of the tournament.
Goffin can ill-afford as slow a start as he had a couple of days ago – he was barely moving to balls until the second set, and by then it was a little too late. Thiem has maintained that he is better prepared for his appearance here than last year, but the evidence has been severely lacking on the court.
This is actually a genuinely hard match to call. But with Goffin still sporting the knee strapping that has been affecting him since the US Open, and with his season stretching out for just one more week, Thiem should edge this on paper.
Prediction: Thiem in two sets.
